First man on moon Neil Armstrong dead at 82
U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong, who took a giant leap for mankind when he became the first person to walk on the moon, has died at the age of 82, his family said on Saturday.
Armstrong died following complications from heart-bypass surgery he underwent earlier this month, the family said in a statement, just two days after his birthday on August 5.
As commander of the Apollo 11 mission, Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. As he stepped on the dusty surface, Armstrong said: "“That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."
Those words endure as one of the best known quotes in the English language.
The Apollo 11 astronauts' euphoric moonwalk provided Americans with a sense of achievement in the space race with Cold War foe the Soviet Union and while Washington was engaged in a bloody war with the communists in Vietnam.
Neil Alden Armstrong was 38 years old at the time and even though he had fulfilled one of mankind's age-old quests that placed him at the pinnacle of human achievement, he did not revel in his accomplishment. He even seemed frustrated by the acclaim it brought.
"I guess we all like to be recognized not for one piece of fireworks but for the ledger of our daily work," Armstrong said in an interview on CBS's "60 Minutes" program in 2005.
He once was asked how he felt knowing his footprints would likely stay on the moon's surface for thousands of years. "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up," he said.
A VERY PRIVATE MAN
James Hansen, author of "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong," told CBS: "All of the attention that ... the public put on stepping down that ladder onto the surface itself, Neil never could really understand why there was so much focus on that."
The Apollo 11 moon mission turned out to be Armstrong's last space flight. The next year he was appointed to a desk job, being named NASA's deputy associate administrator for aeronautics in the office of advanced research and technology.
Armstrong's post-NASA life was a very private one. He took no major role in ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the moon landing. "He's a recluse's recluse," said Dave Garrett, a former NASA spokesman.
Hansen said stories of Armstrong dreaming of space exploration as a boy were apocryphal, although he was long dedicated to flight. "His life was about flying. His life was about piloting," Hansen said.
Born August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong was the first of three children of Stephen and Viola Armstrong. He married his college sweetheart, Janet Shearon, in 1956. They were divorced in 1994, when he married Carol Knight.
Armstrong had his first joyride in a plane at age 6. Growing up in Ohio, he began making model planes and by his early teens had amassed an extensive aviation library. With money earned from odd jobs, he took flying lessons and obtained his pilot's license even before he got a car license.
In high school he excelled in science and mathematics and won a U.S. Navy scholarship to Purdue University in Indiana, enrolling in 1947. He left after two years to become a Navy pilot, flying combat missions in the Korean War and winning three medals.
FLYING TEST PLANES
After the war he returned to Purdue and graduated in 1955 with an aeronautical engineering degree. He joined the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA), which became NASA in 1958.
Armstrong spent seven years at NACA's high-speed flight station at Edwards Air Force Base in California, becoming one of the world's best test pilots. He flew the X-15 rocket plane to the edge of space - 200,000 feet up at 4,000 mph.
In September 1962, Armstrong was selected by NASA to be an astronaut. He was command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission and backup command pilot for the Gemini 11 mission, both in 1966.
On the Gemini 8 mission, Armstrong and fellow astronaut David Scott performed the first successful docking of a manned spacecraft with another space vehicle.
Armstrong put his piloting skills to good use on the moon landing, overriding the automatic pilot so he and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin would not have to land their module in a big rocky crater.
Yet the landing was not without danger. The lander had only about 30 seconds of fuel left when Armstrong put it down in an area known as the Sea of Tranquility and calmly radioed back to Mission Control on Earth, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed."
Aldrin, who along with Armstrong and Michael Collins formed the Apollo 11 crew, told BBC radio that he would remember Armstrong as "a very capable commander and leader of an achievement that will be recognized until man sets foot on the planet Mars."
Armstrong left the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) a year after Apollo 11 to become a professor of engineering at the University of Cincinnati.
DECLINES OFFERS TO RUN FOR OFFICE
After his aeronautical career, Armstrong was approached by political groups, but unlike former astronauts John Glenn and Harrison Schmitt who became U.S. senators, he declined all offers.
In 1986, he served on a presidential commission that investigated the explosion that destroyed the space shuttle Challenger, killing its crew of seven shortly after launch from Cape Canaveral in January of that year.
Armstrong made a rare public appearance several years ago when he testified to a congressional hearing against President Barack Obama administration's plans to buy rides from other countries and corporations to ferry U.S. astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
Armstrong also said that returning humans to the moon was not only desirable, but necessary for future exploration -- even though NASA says it is no longer a priority.
He lived in the Cincinnati area with his wife, Carol.
"We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away," the family said in their statement. "Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend."
His family expressed hope that young people around the world would be inspired by Armstrong's feat to push boundaries and serve a cause greater than themselves.
"The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," the family said.
Obama said that Armstrong "was among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time. ...
"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown - including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space. That legacy will endure - sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."
Glenn, an original NASA astronaut with Armstrong, spoke of his colleague's humble nature. "He was willing to dare greatly for his country and he was proud to do that and yet remained the same humble person he'd always been," he told CNN on Saturday.
The space agency sent out a brief statement in the wake of the news, saying it "offers its condolences on today's passing of Neil Armstrong, former test pilot, astronaut and the first man on the moon."
Armstrong is survived by his two sons, a stepson and stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, a brother and a sister, NASA said.
Some controversy still surrounds his famous quote. The live broadcast did not have the "a" in "one small step for a man ..." He and NASA insisted static had obscured the "a," but after repeated playbacks, he admitted he may have dropped the letter and expressed a preference that quotations include the "a" in parentheses.

Ek Tha Tiger made 15 Crores on it’s first Tuesday at the domestic box office. The 7 day total of the movie is 135.05 Crores. The box office collections of Ek Tha Tiger can in no way be termed as anything less than spectacular. Many movies have touched these figures but Salman Khan has now proved that speed does matter.

Whether Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are the best of buddies or rivals I neither know nor care? However, it seems there has always been a comparison for supremacy between the two. Rumors come and go but numbers speak the bare facts and so we restrict ourselves to just numbers here.

For starters Ra.One grossed an opening day collection of 18 Crores nett whereas Ek Tha Tiger broke all records by amassing a huge 32.92 Crores at the domestic box office. The clear reason for this being, Ek Tha Tiger releasing on the 15th of August, i.e. Indian Independence Day when people had a public holiday and thus visited theaters. On the other hand Ra.One release on Diwali when most of the Hindu households stayed back at home for the traditional ceremonies. One cannot however, deny that besides the release date, the movie in itself, its publicity, etc made Ek Tha Tiger a record breaking grosser at the Indian Box Office.
Come 2nd day and Ra.One took a huge leap coz of the holiday which followed. The movie made a fantastic 25.1 Crores on day 2 in India. However, Ek Tha Tiger saw a noticeable drop on it’s 2nd day when it made just 14.55 Crores. Now we must keep in mind that Day 2 was a working day in the case of Ek Tha Tiger.
Ek Tha Tiger fell further on it’s 3rd day grossing merely 12.8 Crores whereas Ra.One dropped to a 16 Crore low on it’s 3rd day. Thanks to the the opening day collections of Ek Tha Tiger it’s 3 Day total, i.e. 60.27 Crores is still greater than that of Ra.One, i.e. 59.10 Crores. The difference though small is still a notable number.
Ra.One held back to it’s 16 Crores even on Day 4 whereas Ek Tha Tiger rose to 16.78 Crores.
Ek Tha Tiger gave the final stinger on it’s 1st Sunday (Day 5) grossing a mammoth 23 Crores at the domestic box office. Ra.One had grossed 16 Crores on it’s 5th Day. Thus the 5 days total for Ra.One was 91.10 Crores. On the other hand the 5 days total for Ek Tha Tiger is 100.05 Crores. The movie has created history in being the fastest to join the 100 Crore Club.
It’s quite clear that Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger has beaten SRK’s Ra.One by a huge margin of about 9 Crores. Now which was a better movie is tough to say as both got mixed reviews. Ek Tha Tiger Creates Yet Another Record at the Box Office – Monday Collections
Ek Tha Tiger made approx 16 Crores nett on it’s 1st Monday at the domestic box office. This is a record in itself as the highest box office collection on a Monday by any Bollywood movie. Eid being a holiday and Salman’s most favorable time, Ek Tha Tiger amassed a huge sum on Monday. The total collections of Ek Tha Tiger yet is 116.05 Crores.
The movie it seems is on a record breaking spree. Firstly, the highest 1st day collection, then the highest on any given day by a movie, then the fastest 100 Crore and now a record breaking Monday, Ek Tha Tiger is indeed on fire. Collections will drop on Tuesday, however the movie has more than just created history. The drop really won’t matter to Salman Khan as the coming weekend will rejuvenate the movie yet again.

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ Registers Salman’s fourth 100 crore Box Office Success in a Row
No one blinked an eyelid when ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ scored in the excess of 32.92 Crores on the first day. It was pretty much on the cards and while the number seemed quite unbelievable, the hype and hoopla around the film meant that this number was pretty much on the cards.
On the same line of thought, it was again a foregone conclusion that the Salman Khan starrer would score fastest century ever with the 100 crore mark being reached in six, if not five days. Ek Tha Tiger made 23 Crores on it’s 1st Sunday at the domestic box office. The movie which had grossed a Day 1 box office collection of 32.92 Crores, Day 2 of 14.55 Crores, Day 3 of 12.80 Crores, and Day 4 of 16.78 Crores now stands at a nett total of 100.05 Crores. Now this is a huge achievement indeed, considering the fact that the record was held by ‘Bodyguard’ (again a Salman Khan starrer) which needed nine days to reach this mark.
Such huge moolah coming in the quickest possible time (till date at the least) also shows that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, despite mixed response, hasn’t been shown the back by those who had already made up their mind to watch the film. They may or may not be totally bowled over by the latest offering from Salman but the fact remains that there is a substantial population watching the film. Moreover due to Eid, the collections are only going to be further stable for a couple of days at the least, hence making this Kabir Khan directed film coming quite close to ‘Dabangg‘ collections of 140 crores.
The question which is being frequently asked is – ‘Will ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ turn out to be not just Salman’s biggest grosser till date but also turn out to be highest grosser of all times, hence eclipsing Aamir Khan’s 202 record for ‘3 Idiots‘?’. Well, there is no rocket science in saying that the film would easily eclipse ‘Bodyguard‘ record of 148 crore, hence turning out to be Salman’s biggest grosser ever. Ek Tha Tiger Shows Good Jump at the Saturday Box Office
Ek Tha Tiger made an approx 16 Crores on it’s 1st Saturday at the Indian box office. Starting off with a huge 32.92 Crores, Ek Tha Tiger had made 14.55 Crores on it’s 2nd day and a 12.80 Crores nett on it’s 1st Friday. The total box office collections of Ek Tha Tiger as of now is 76.27 Crores
Ek Tha Tiger showed a good response at the box office on Saturday. At some places the jump was over 50%, while others had to stay content with a 10% jump. Metro cities have been doing pretty well and the jump was quite prominent here. Be it Mumbai., Delhi, or other small cities, all saw a good amount of rise in the box office collections of Ek Tha Tiger.

Govt bans bulk SMSes to quell rumour-mongering
After reports of threatening messages being sent through SMS, MMS, e-mails and postings on social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to people from the Northeast in cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune, the Indian government has levied a ban on sending bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days.
The Union Home Ministry has asked the Department of Telecommunications to implement the order through the telecom operators. From Friday onwards, for the next 15 days no one will be able to send more than five SMSes at one go and more than 20 KB of data through mobile phones.
A large number of northeastern students fled Bangalore by special trains late Wednesday and early Thursday following rumours they would be attacked to avenge the ethnic violence in Assam. A similar exodus of people from northeastern states was seen in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune.
Such rumours were spreading like wild fire due to bulk SMSes and malicious postings on social media websites. Morphed, fake MMSes showing atrocities against a particular community too were adding to the existing panic and frenzy, thus the government has put a ban on bulk MMSes too.
Addressing the Parliament, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said, "We should send clear message that we will do everything to provide security to people from northeast living in various parts of country."
Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar also on Friday ordered an inquiry into the rumour-mongering about alleged security threats that triggered off panic and led to an exodus of people from northeastern states from this tech hub since late Wednesday.
About 240,000 people from the northeast region live in Bangalore and another 100,000 in other cities across Karnataka.
"The chief minister informed Members of Parliament from the state in New Delhi that he has directed police to investigate the wild rumours against northeast people in Bangalore and alleged threats to their students as a backlash against the ethnic violence in Assam," an official of the Chief Minister's Office told IANS here.
Police have intensified patrolling in localities populated by northeast people, including college-going students, blue-collar and white-collar employees, security guards and women working in beauty salons.
While the state government, right-wing Hindu outfits like Sri Rama Sena and Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS), Muslim organisations and civil society exhorted the northeast people, especially students, not to leave the city or the state, about 4,500 more of them left late Thursday in four special trains bound for Guwahati in Assam.
As part of the investigation, cyber sleuths attached to the city police crime branch have started cracking at the sensational messages sent through SMS and MMS, e-mails and postings on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter that caused panic and fear among the people from the region.
Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashoka, who holds the home portfolio, said the helplines - 080-2225-0999 and 080-2294-2222 - will be open on 24x7 basis.
Over the weekend, two people were killed and 55 wounded when about 10,000 people rioted in Mumbai after Muslims held a protest against violence involving members of their religion.
Muslims across India have been alarmed by clashes in recent weeks between indigenous people in Assam and Muslim illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. About 75 people have been killed and more than 400,000 displaced. (Agencies)

'Ragini MMS 2' to start by year end: Sunny
Mumbai: After Jism 2, it's Ragini MMS 2 for Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone and she reveals that the shooting of the horror-thriller sequel will start in a few months.
"I love India. I am so happy I am here, I'll be staying here for a while. I have a lot of different projects coming up. Ragini MMS 2 is something we are going to start shooting by the end of this year," the 31-year-old said here on Sunday.
Taking about the preparations for Ragini MMS 2 and other projects, she said: "I'll be doing workshops here in India, I'll be doing them before Ragini MMS 2. I'll be taking dance classes, Hindi lessons, watching Hindi movies. It's like going back to school for me."
Ragini MMS 2 is a sequel to Ekta Kapoor's 2011-film Ragini MMS which starred Kainaz Motivala and Raj Kumar Yadav.
Meanwhile, Sunny does not feel any heat from established Bollywood actresses.
"I don't like the word. Competition is something, unless it's in sports, it's kind of like a negative word, at least in my book. These women (actresses) work so hard. I know what goes into making a movie now," Sunny said.
"I know all these different appearances and other things that we do, it's a business and on top of that you have a lot of fun. But competition, everyone is in their own league and in their own space," she added.

Dhoom 3: Aamir rents a home in Chicago
Fatherhood for the third time has turned Aamir Khan into quite a home-bird. He wants to stay as close to wife Kiran and newly-born son Azaad as possible. Opting for a departure from his habitual way of working, Aamir has taken wife and son to Chicago to be with him for the 3-month schedule.
And now we hear from a friend of Aamir that the star, while shooting for Dhoom 3, has opted to stay in a rented apartment in Chicago with his family rather than a hotel.
Says the close friend of Kiran and Aamir, "Though Yashraj wanted to hire a suite in one of the best hotels in Chicago for Aamir, Kiran and Azaad but Aamir declined the offer. He preferred a rented apartment.
In this way, he cut down Yashraj's accommodation budget in Chicago for Aamir by nearly 60 percent. But the main reason why Aamir opted to stay in a rented place is the ghar ka mahaul. The homely environment is what turns Aamir on these days."
Aamir apparently told his friends that nothing gives him greater joy nowadays than to return home to see Kiran and Azaad waiting for him.
Says the friend, "The thought of staying in a posh intimidating hotel for three months upset Aamir. He loves ghar ka khana. In the apartment, where they're staying, Kiran is constantly cooking up interesting dishes."
In fact, so inspiring is Aamir's home-away-from-home system of working in Chicago, that we now hear that the film's other leading man Abhishek Bachchan has invited his entire family to join him in Chicago and stay together in a rented apartment.
Says a source, "Abhishek's wife Aishwarya and daughter Aaradhya are joining him soon in Chicago. Big B and Jayaji will follow soon after. They want to get some time together away from home and prying eyes."
With two of the principal actors of Dhoom 3 blissfully bonding with their respective families in America, it looks like Dhoom 3 will turn out to be one happy affair!

Ek Tha Tiger made a fair 14.55 Crores on it’s day 2 at the Indian Box Office. The total domestic box office collections of the movie now stands at 47.5 Crores. The considerable drop in it’s box office collection was only expected, Thursday being a working day. However, Ek Tha Tiger‘s 1st 2 Days box office collections can be termed as nothing less than spectacular.
Ek Tha Tiger will pick up at the box office again in the weekend and Monday being Eid will see a huge footfall in movie theaters across India. If the movie manages to maintain it’s momentum for this weekend there is no saying what new milestone will Salman Khan achieve with this flick.

The most expensive cars to insure
Think your car insurance premiums are high? The difference between the cheapest and costliest vehicles to insure can amount to several thousand dollars a year. And we’re talking about models from major automakers, not exotic cars like Ferraris and Bentleys where every aspect of ownership is of a “if you have to ask you can’t afford it” nature.
Though auto insurance companies largely base premiums on a motorist’s driving record, address, age, gender, marital status and credit rating, the make and model of car one drives is also a determining factor. As one might imagine, pricier cars tend to carry higher premiums than more-affordable models. “The more expensive the car the more it typically costs to repair, especially when you consider exotic materials being used in some of these autos like aluminum and carbon fiber,” explains Terrence Cahill, director of communications for
21st Century Insurance. Beyond that, insurance companies base their rates on claims histories, including how much damage a given model incurs in a typical crash, the extent of injuries (and fatalities) suffered by occupants and other parties, the cost of damage to other vehicles and property and which models are more or less likely to be stolen.
We’ve compiled a slideshow of the top 20 most-expensive rides to insure as determined by Insurance.com, along with their average anticipated premium costs. Be aware that the amounts given are perfect-world averages based upon a hypothetical single 40-year-old male with a clean driving record commuting 12 miles to work each day, with typical coverage limits. Many drivers – especially those living in large metropolitan areas and having one or more accidents and/or moving violations on their records can expect to pay higher premiums, and in many cases substantially more.
For example, a recent survey found that registering even a single moving violation can boost car insurance rates by between 12 and 22 percent depending on the infraction. A comprehensive zip code analysis by CarInsurance.com determined that, all else being equal, a motorist living in Highland Park, Mich. would pay around 577 percent more for car insurance than the same person residing in the sleepy burg of Bullhead City, Ariz.
And that’s if a given motorist can obtain coverage at all. Some companies may choose not to cover certain high-performance autos altogether, and many will opt to take a pass on motorists having several blemishes on his or her driving record, especially if they’re driving what’s considered a high-risk model.
The fine print: Insure.com’s survey was conducted earlier this year by Quadrant Information Services, and based on rates using data on 900 model-year 2012 car models from six large carriers (Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, Nationwide, Progressive and State Farm) in 10 ZIP codes per state. Estimates are based on an unmarried 40-year-old male driver with no accidents or moving violations who drives 12 miles to work each day, with policy limits of 100/300/50 ($100,000 for injury liability for one person, $300,000 for all injuries and $50,000 for property damage in an accident) and a $500 deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage.
